Anecdote (inaccuracies aplenty)
Santacon is a worldwide annual event. The UK event sent out an invitation via a newsgroup telling everyone when are where to meet up.

This year we met up outside Holborn station. I was dressed as "Sheriff Santa" and my friend was dressed as "The Real Original Santa". Over 300 hundred people turned up around midday and we were on our way. Our first port of call was the grand masonic lodge of London where we sang songs and tried to persuade security to let us in. They wouldn't even after i handed them a wrapped gift in the form of a softcore pornographic magazine. So we went down to the ice-skating park and handed out more gifts - toys for the children and contraceptives/copies of "Razzle" for the adults. Both were received equally well. A quick conga around the rink and we were off.

Next stop was Trafalgar square where we scrambled onto Nelson's column to sing santacon carols to the thronging public. This went down particularly well and and we got a thunderous round of applause.

Later we decided to go to Leicester Square where we took the liberty of using the funfair in Leicester Square to play dodgems. Some two dozen santas also went on the helter-skelter ride. We also went to Picadilly Circus to sing some more carosl and did an impromptu conga in the Virgin Megastore. We left when the police turned up and went to Soho to get drunk. The staff at the Hogshead pub were most surprised to see around 300 santas turn up.

The things started to get a little hazy. I think we gatecrashed an avant-garde event called "Santa's Ghetto" and the police started to close in. Ominous dancing and merriment kicked in and most of the Santas made it down Oxford Street to head to St Pauls. This is where my sidekick and i parted company to go clubbing up in Camdent Town.

Santacon was great fun because it was so diverse. There were robot santas, Michael Jackson santas, burlesque santas, girlesque santas, santas in drag, "evil" santas, punk santas and anarcho-dandy santas. There were rich santas, poor santas, asian santas and extrovert santas. It was the most fun you could ever have wearing a red and white suit, and for me giving out presents gave it a feeling of altruism. We were *hardcore* santas.
